What is The Crime Rate Like in Leicester in 2019

With a population of over 400,000, Leicester is a district settlement of Leicestershire and just like every other cosmopolitan and diverse city, it isn’t crime-free.

To put it into perspective, according to police.uk, Leicester’s crime rate is higher than average for the Leicestershire area. Since 2016 there’s been a steady increase in crime in Leicester, robberies included.

According to Pumplot, between October 2018 and September 2019, violent crime was ranked the highest, representing 29.5% of crimes committed in Leicester. Burglary, on the other hand, had a 9.9% decrease with around 7,400 incidents reported within this time frame and has been following this pattern in past years. It can be argued that this decrease is a result of the increase of security systems present in commercial and domestic properties, such as CCTV and burglar alarms, which are effective crime deterrents for pre-planned crimes.

However, these figures can be meaningless when isolated, so let’s look at it from a different angle. In the year ending March 2019, Leicester had about the same average crime rate as other similar areas, such as Bolton and Salford, it was higher than Coventry and Birmingham but slightly lower than Manchester and Middlesborough.
